HOW TO SURVIVE AT COLLEGE.
or
HAIL DOROTHY: THERE REALLY IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME

OK, so you've moved away from home. You have your 18-year-old security blanket, your books and enough underwear so that you just might not have to find a laundry before Spring Break. You think you have everything covered. If only life were so simple.

Unfortunately, ugly things may be lurking:

  • Just as you were organizing your pretty rose-colored comforter on your bed you are rudely interrupted by your new room-mate. The hairy, belching rugby-player stands in the doorway scratches herself and says: "On the floor and give me fifty you lily-livered wench".
  • Four hours into the registration process, you find yourself prostrate on the floor and wracked with grief because Sociology 101 has closed and you're nowhere near the top of the line.
  • You walk into your first lecture late to find that the only seat left is one right in front of the professor.
  • The person standing at the side of their broken-down car who you were openly hostile to turns out to be your Academic Advisor.
  • You lose your ID card.
  • You realize that you are not as competent at Physics as you first thought and develop an interest in European Studies.
  • Everybody laughs at your southern accent and no-one wants to be your friend.
  • You develop a strange rash and a nervous twitch.
  • Your Dad refuses to accept your collect call.
  • You discover you're at an all-girl college.

Now calm down. Take a deep breath.

Stress hits everyone at school. Some people look stressed and some don't but everyone is experiencing stress at some point. If you can learn how to manage stress you will have mastered the art of self-awareness. A person who recognizes and manages stress is able to use it positively to motivate and energize; and they are the people who can pull off a last minute paper with poise, focus and attitude.
